About Us
Coastal Farmland Trust (CFT) is a newly formed nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating long-term, secure, and affordable land tenure for the next generations of farmers in Northwest Washington. We envision a future where diverse local farms thrive while stewarding the land and producing abundant, healthy food.
Using principles from the community land trust model, and land conservation tools used by land trusts across the state, CFT hopes to support farmers in gaining secure access to land, either through affordable ownership or equitable lease opportunities.
Traditionally, land trusts work with existing landowners to conserve their property for generations to come. However, land prices in Washington make buying or expanding a farm impossible for many farmers, even those with off-farm income. What happens when farmers can’t afford to own land to begin with? CFT facilitates affordable farmland access through owning and holding land and using ground leases, and other creative ownership models, to facilitate land tenure that works for farmers.
CFT brings local, specialized experience and skills to facilitate more options for farmers of any scale to access farmland, secure permanent land tenure, and steward the incredible natural resources that support our community.
