Permanently affordable farmland for farmers of the North Puget Sound
About Us
Traditional land trusts focus on conserving land with existing owners but often overlook the barriers faced by new and expanding farmers. Land prices in Washington make buying or expanding a farm impossible for many farmers, even those with off-farm income. What happens when farmers can’t afford to own land to begin with?
CFT bridges this gap by applying community land‑trust principles and established conservation tools to facilitate long‑term, secure and affordable land tenure for the next generation. By holding farmland in trust and providing equitable lease or purchase options, we ensure that future farmers can live on and steward the land while producing abundant, healthy food for their communities.
Coastal Farmland Trust (CFT) is a newly formed nonprofit organization working to secure long-term, affordable land access for the next generation of farmers in Northwest Washington. We bring together farmers, land conservation practitioners, community land trust professionals, and planners to address the growing challenges of farmland access and affordability. We are building a future of land access that will provide pathways to farm ownership for those who might otherwise struggle to secure stable, reliable farmland.
